Tell her you love her. You sister's problem is she has noone to turn to. Her mother is gone, her father is jsut about gone too. SHe has noone to lean on. Those simple words "I love You." Can change the day. ALos get her somthing like a blanket, or a teddy bear. They may seem childish but it can help. Just do it. And visit her more she needs sothing to look forward to.

Tell her that you love her and are there for her. That things will get better, that you and her will look back on these times when you are older. Tell her that her adult life is about to begin and if she commits suicide then all those things she will not get to experience.

Usually for a Freshman Senator they are, as determined by the party. Senior Senators are usually given the assignments they ask for. The majority party always has the committee chair. The Senior member of the minority party is ranking member.

Since there is more than a month between the election and the beginning of the new Congress, the leadership of each party in each house make the committee assignments. They factor in member seniority (though seniority is more likely to determine what "rank" you are within a committee rather than which committee you are assigned to), member request (what committees the member wants to serve on), member's location (a member from Iowa would be better for an agriculture committee since so much of the state is devoted to farming), and member specialty (a member who is a doctor would be better for a health committee than a businessperson).

The Democratic leaders pick the Democrats for each committee and the Republican leaders pick the Republicans. It's incredibly rare that the majority party leader rejects or changes the minority leader's assignments for his or her party. The entire house then votes to approve the committee assignments as one of their first acts when they convene in January (more of a formality since the house never rejects the assignments).

On a side note, in addition to the committees you listed above, Senator Al Franken (D-MN) is also serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee and three of its subcommittees. His appointment to the Health, Labor, Pensions, and Education Committee is "pending" until it finishes its current business. Then he will officially work with that committee.

It is generally by appointment and seniority.

Except, for example, when Ron Paul was the ranking member of the House Financial Services committee and should have chaired the monetary policy subcommittee as a result. Instead the GOP disbanded the committee and the next year appointed a new Republican to the House Finance Committee who had the sole recommendation of being senior to Ron Paul.

Oh well.

He took the oath first, then was given the various assignments. And yes, every Senator is assigned to their various committees upon arrival in the Senate.
